OverDrive eBooks and Audio Books Library

Overdrive Media ConcoleWhat is it?

OverDrive is a digital lending service that allows you to check out and temporarily download eBooks and audio books to your personal devices. Check out up to 3 books at a time. Read on your computer, Smartphone or eReader. Check out books anywhere where you have Internet access. This means you can borrow books from home and over the summer. Choose how long you want your lending period to be. Books will automatically be returned at the end of your lending period of 7 or 14 days, or you can return/delete them early from OverDrive after reading.

Follow these steps to get started:

1.   Make sure you have the OverDrive app installed on your personal device. It is called “Overdrive Media Console” at the Apple App Store. During this installation you may be asked to register for a free AdobeID, which you should also do. These can be found on the OverDrive home page listed below under Getting Started. *Kindle users should not need these downloads.

2.   Go to the Capital Region BOCES Overdrive site: or access from the library homepage.

3.   Click on Sign In. Select Guilderland Central School District and enter your library card number.  This will be the same username you use for the Destiny Library Catalog. Students = last 5 digits of your student ID number (no zeros).

Start Checking Out eBooks!

1.   Browse for eBooks and audio books on the OverDrive website. When you find one you like click on Add to Cart.* Books will remain in your cart for up to 30 minutes while you continue to browse. If a book is not available you may click Place a Hold to get on a waiting list; you will be notified by email when that book becomes available.
* You will need to choose the format that is compatible with your personal device. Some eBooks are only available in certain formats.  EPUB and PDF will work with most devices and PCs. If you have a Kindle you will need to download books that are in the Kindle format. For more information check out OverDrive’s Compatible Devices help page.

2.   Check out. Once you have selected your books navigate to My Cart and click ‘Proceed to checkout.’ Choose a lending period for each book, then click ‘Confirm Checkout.’

3.   Download books to your digital device. While you may browse and checkout books from school, downloading should take place at home and on your personal devices. Access your checked out books from home by logging into your OverDrive account and clicking My Bookshelf. Click on Download to transfer the book to your desired device.

4.   Your books will automatically be returned when the lending period runs out.  Check My Bookshelf to see when your book will expire.  To return a book early, find the title in your eReader program and select ‘Return Borrowed Item’ or ‘Return and Delete.’
