19-A Examiner/Driver Trainer

Location: Transportation Department


Start Date: Immediately


This is a management level position involving responsibility for the training, orientation and testing of new and experienced bus drivers. The work involves the management of 19-A records of the transportation department. The work is performed under the supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation allowing leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. As a member of the Transportation Management Team, the 19-A trainer does related work as required.

Responsibilities: *Responsible for training and/or retraining new and experienced bus drivers.
*Train and test prospective substitute bus drivers and provide detailed information to the Transportation
Supervisor regarding their hiring as a substitute bus driver.
*Orient new and experienced drivers regarding individual routes and special assignments.
*Observe drivers on routes, loading/unloading at schools, parking at schools, parking in the transportation
compound, and other areas as required.
*Conduct training and refresher clinics to assists drivers who have been identified as needing help correcting a
deficiency in their driving and other related work.
*Participate and/or conduct safety training sessions as required by the school district or regulation.
*Maintain 19-A files and records related to accidents, road tests, defensive driving and safety courses.
*Assist in resolving employee concerns and safety issues.
*Assist in developing reports required from the Transportation Department.
*Assist in the preparation of the Transportation Newsletter.
*In emergencies, may operate a school bus on an assigned route.
*Perform work as required by the Transportation Supervisor.

Additional Qualifications: The 19-A Examiner/Driver Trainer should demonstrate the ability to meet work schedules and maintain output of work under normal conditions. Regular attendance, dependability, acceptance of responsibility, willingness to follow established procedures, cooperate with supervisors, interact appropriately with a diverse group of employees, and ability to react appropriately to changing work conditions are normal expectations of the job. The 19-A Trainer should demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the operation of school buses and of the geography of the District; the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables; the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; a good knowledge of driving safety conditions; knowledge of Department of Transportation, Department of Motor Vehicles and NYS Education Department Laws and Regulations.

The 19-A Trainer should have experience as a school bus driver; be certified by the Motor Vehicle Bureau to
test bus drivers; be certified by the New York State Education Department to teach the 20 hour course/SBDI;
and have a good working knowledge of Traffic Laws.

Salary: $45,000-$50,000 annually depending on experience
