Yes I Can

By Paul Gallione

I believe that anything is possible. If your mind is set on one single goal, you can achieve it, no matter what anyone says. I’ve accomplished so many things that I’ve wanted to do even when I’ve had people say that it’s impossible. I have a disorder where my left arm is smaller than my right. I have little use of my arm. People are shocked to see the things I can do. I’ve had people say, “You can’t do that because of your arm.” When I hear people say that, I don’t get angry. I show them I can do it.

One year in gym class, the unit I was doing was rock climbing. It was something I was looking forward to all year. The teacher went up to me and said I would have to sit out this whole unit and do written work. I have to admit I was a bit angry. But I didn’t show it. I told my teacher that I wasn’t going to watch all of my friends have fun while I sat in the corner and be bored all ten weeks of the unit. We made a deal. If I was willing to stay after and try it, I would be able to participate in class.

All I had to do was go about two meters up the wall and I would be done. But I had a different idea. I made it all the way up to the top of the rock wall and rang that bell. When I got down, I saw the look on my gym teacher’s face. It was priceless. Today I still remember the look on his face. He looked like he just won a new yellow mustang convertible. So I was able to participate in class with all of my peers. I was treated like everyone else and I fit in.
So if anyone say’s that something is impossible, correct them and show them that nothing is impossible. Don’t let the “do’s” and “don’ts” stop you in your path to achieving your goals. Complete your goals and move on with your life. Shock people by doing what they thought couldn’t be done.
