Driver Education - Spring 2018

Spring 2018

Registration for the Spring 2018 Driver Education program will be done on a first come basis. At the time a student turns in their application, they will pay and choose their class and driving time. Please see the calendar (below, and to the right under Quick Links, for driving and class times. The course fee is $434 and must be paid at time of registration.

About the program

Driver Education is offered after school during the school year and also during the regular summer session.
Course requirements include 24 hours of in-class instruction; 18 hours of road in-car time; 6 hours of individual behind-the-wheel instruction = for a total of 48 hours.

In order to participate, students must be at least 16 years old and have a valid New York State learner’s permit or driver’s license.

Attendance: It is the student’s responsibility to meet the course requirements as established by the New York State Education Department. Please see the calendar posted on the internet for actual dates of each section.

Classroom instruction: Times will be reserved at the time application is made and payment is received. Students are not allowed to switch classroom times back and forth; they must attend the course they chose, either Monday, 5:45 – 7:15 pm, straight through or Wednesdays, 5:45 – 7:15 pm, barring hospitalization or death in the family.

Classes begin on Feb. 5 (for Monday evening classes) and Feb. 7 (for Wednesday evening class.) Please refer to the calendar posted on our website. NOTE: Any snow days or cancellations will be made up at the discretion of the classroom teacher – this may include classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Students are encouraged to advise the classroom teacher of any accommodations needed to assist the student in their learning. Students are contacted frequently through the Guilderland High School e-mail account regarding this program. Please make sure to check your account for any updates.

In-car observation and student driving time: Driving will occur once per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 2:30 – 4 or 4 – 5:30 p.m. NOTE: Any snow days or cancellations will be made up at the discretion of the driving instructor. These will be on Fridays. Times will be reserved at the time application is made and payment is received.

Driving begins on Feb. 5 and ends on June 11, 2018.

All participating students must attend the classroom sessions each week and must also drive each week. Driving sessions will depart from the rear of the High School at the West Gym entrance. Students are encouraged to advise the driving teacher of any accommodations needed to assist the student in learning to drive a vehicle. Students are contacted frequently through the Guilderland High School e-mail account regarding this program. Please make sure to check your account for any updates.

All students are registered for the Fall Driver Education program on a first come basis. Students must bring application, money and permit/license to register.

Monday, Feb. 5, 2018
First day of driving for Sections 1, 2, 9 and 10
First day of classes for Monday evenings

Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018
First day of driving for Sections 3 and 4

Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2017
First day of driving for Sections 5, 6, 11 and 12
First classroom session for Wednesday class

Thursday, Feb. 8, 2017
First day of driving for Sections 7 & 8

Again, the New York State requirement for attendance in Driver Education is extremely rigid. There are NO allowed absences. Students who fail to attend all classes and driving times risk being denied their MV285.
