Westmere named a Blue Ribbon School

In September 2008, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings named Westmere Elementary School a 2008 No Child Left Behind—Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. Westmere Elementary School was one of only 20 schools from throughout New York State to be recognized with this prestigious designation.

On October 30, Westmere Elementary School hosted a school-wide assembly to celebrate this exciting honor. Orysia Dmytrenko, a representative from the United States Department of Education Deputy Secretary’s Office, was on hand to present the Blue Ribbon Award to Westmere Elementary School's former Principal Deborah Drumm. In addition, the event featured special performances and presentations by each grade level. From singing and dancing, to a Blue Ribbon fashion show, Westmere students and staff demonstrated why they truly are a school of excellence.

In addition to student-performances, the celebration also featured very special guests Assemblyman Jack McEneny, Assemblyman Tim Gordon, Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent Charles Dedrick, BOCES Board President Sandy Belonick, New York State Department of Education representatives Dawn Thompson and Jane Briggs, and Guilderland Teachers Association President Maceo Dubose.
