Fourth grade students at Westmere Elementary School collected coins and online donations from May 17-May 28 to benefit the Guilderland Food Pantry. Through remote and in-person donations, the students raised $1831, which will provide 9,155 meals to members of the community.
Teachers and students worked within Covid restrictions when planning the coin drive. Initially students met with Mr. McDonnell, the Executive Director of the Guilderland Food Pantry, via Google Meet. They learned about the food pantry and the impact it has on the community. To promote the coin drive, in-person students made posters and conducted presentations to K-3 classes while remote students made a video to share with offsite and remote learners. A Westmere parent generously created a website to facilitate online donations, which was a helpful resource for remote learning families.
These efforts resulted in $1831 raised for the Guilderland Food Pantry, which the students shared with Mr. McDonnell via a Google Meet on June 2.
