Each month, the art teachers from Altamont Elementary, Guilderland Elementary, Lynnwood Elementary and Westmere Elementary highlight students who have demonstrated they are practicing Studio Habits of Mind. These eight habits – develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds – encourage and enable students to be more mindful during the creative process. This is not a contest; the Young Artist of the Month accomplishment acknowledges specific learning and critical thinking that happens in the art room, in relation to Studio Habits of Mind. The students’ pictures and statements are framed and hung in the schools’ entryways.
Altamont Elementary: Jackson Rice

Jackson Rice, in Mrs. Ciccarelli’s first grade class, has been selected as the Young Artist of the Month for showcasing the Studio Habit of Mind, reflect. This habit is all about thinking about your artwork, looking at what worked well, and figuring out how to make it even better. Look at the amazing art he has been able to create by practicing this studio habit. Congratulations, Jackson. Keep up the good work!
Guilderland Elementary: Isabella Bailey

The Young Artist of the Month at GES is Isabella Bailey. Isabella is in Mrs. Nagel’s kindergarten class. During art, Isabella has exhibited the Artist Habit of Mind, develop craft. This means she can use different tools, materials and techniques. During our art class Isabella listens closely to the directions. She is able to think about what she needs to do and then create her art in her own way, while still following the directions. This year she has learned to use scissors, clay, glue, paint, printmaking or stamping, oil pastels and markers. There is always something fun to discover and learn in art and Isabella has done a great job experimenting with all these materials! Way to go Isabella, keep up the great work.
Lynnwood Elementary: Maia Evans-Ruiz

The Lynnwood Young Artist of the Month for March is Maia Evans-Ruiz. Maia is in Ms. Lewis’ fifth grade class. Maia embodies the Studio Habits of Mind, Express and Reflection. Express means to make art that shares a personal idea or story. In our project about our family culture, Maia showed the bright, vibrant culture of her Mexican heritage through the symbols she picked, the colors and celebratory fireworks. Maia is also excellent at Reflection. Reflection is when an artist thinks about and talks about their artistic process. Maia questions her ideas, thinks about each choice and revises and edits her work along the way to make it the best she possibly can. Congratulations Maia, keep creating!
Westmere Elementary: Mahia Zafeera

This month’s featured young artist is Mahia Zafeera! Mahia is a fifth grade student in Mrs. Ray’s class. She has demonstrated the Studio Habit of Mind: Develop Craft. Artists can show good craftsmanship by taking their time to create neat, detailed, high quality artwork! I have noticed Mahia puts a lot of effort into each project she makes and pays close attention to detail. Mahia comes to art class with a positive attitude each week and always tries her best.
Magnificent work, Mahia!
