Aug. 30 Update: facilities upgrades, start of school information

A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

With the Labor Day holiday upon us, the start of the school year is not far behind. Everyone at the Guilderland Central School District is ready, eager and excited to begin a new year of learning and growth.

Our staff has been busy preparing for the start of the school year. Many improvements to our facilities have taken place over the summer. At Guilderland High School improvements include bathroom renovations, mechanical upgrades, new auditorium roofing and window replacement. At Farnsworth Middle School the technology labs and nurses suite received updates, along with mechanical upgrades to the gyms. Casework updates were done at Altamont and Lynnwood Elementary Schools and Westmere Elementary School has some new lockers.

These projects were part of the capital improvement project voters approved in Oct. 2021. We are committed to maintaining our school buildings and making the learning environment more comfortable for our students, staff and teachers.

Board seeks candidates to fill vacancy

The board of education is seeking to fill a vacancy for the seat held by Judy Slack, who will resign effective Sept. 11. New York State law allows school boards to fill such vacancies by appointment until the next regular election in May. The appointment will be for a term of approximately seven months, from Oct. 1, 2024 through May 20, 2025. The board invites Guilderland community members to submit a letter of interest and resume for review no later than Sept 13. For more details on candidate qualifications and how to submit a letter of interest, visit the district website.

Discipline referral information

Beginning with the new school year, student discipline referrals will be displayed for families to view on the secure eSchoolData Parent Portal, under the discipline module on the student profile. This additional means of sharing discipline data with families aims to enhance transparency. If you have any questions or issues accessing the portal or this information, please reach out to your child’s building principal or counselor.

Transportation information

Transportation information is now available on the eSchoolData Parent and Student Portals, under the “Buses” tab. This information is also available on the StopFinder app. To learn more about StopFinder, including how to download the app, visit the Transportation section of the district website for details.

I look forward to welcoming students back on the first day of school, Thursday, Sept. 5. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys the remaining days of the summer break.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
