On Thursday, Dec. 12, Farnsworth Middle School hosted its annual cereal box domino event in support of the Guilderland Food Pantry. This beloved tradition not only fosters school spirit but also fuels a friendly rivalry among the school’s four houses—Hiawatha, Mohawk, Seneca, and Tawasentha—as they compete to see who can gather the most donations.
As the donations poured in, a team of dedicated educators got to work, using their math expertise to design an intricate pathway for the domino run. Spanning the entire school, the final design included an impressive 1,302 unopened boxes of cereal, connecting the four houses and symbolizing the unity and collaboration of the FMS community. This remarkable effort set a new school record for donations!
“It’s inspiring to see our whole school come together for such a meaningful purpose,” said Todd Hanson, an FMS math teacher. “Helping so many people while watching our students have fun during the process is exactly what makes events like this so special. It’s amazing how this has grown—from eighth graders collecting cereal during COVID to a schoolwide celebration of teamwork and giving back.”
Beyond supporting the Guilderland Food Pantry, this initiative also benefits the Guilderland Backpack Program. Each week, the program provides local elementary and middle school students with backpacks filled with breakfast, lunch, and dinner essentials, with cereal as a key staple.
