Four members of the Guilderland High School track and field team have dashed their way to the top after competing in the New Balance Nationals on March 11-13. Seventeen GHS students qualified to compete at Nationals, which took place at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York City. Of those seventeen students, four GHS track and field athletes placed 3rd in the country for the Championship 4 x 55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay, in addition to earning All-American status.
GHS students Maeghan Hickey (senior), Kate Scanlan (senior), Kendall Barnhart (sophomore) and Parker Steele (eighth-grade) ran the 4 x 55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay at Nationals, facing some of the top high school track and field athletes in the country. The team finished 3rd overall with a time of 34.99 seconds, marking an extraordinary performance that broke several records.
The team’s time was the fastest time run in New York state this season, as well as the fourth fastest time in the country. In addition, the team’s time of 34.99 seconds broke the GHS school record by more than 2 seconds and was the fastest time ever recorded by a Section 2 team.
This incredible accomplishment also earned Hickey, Scanlan, Barnhart and Steele All-American status, which is awarded to the top six athletes/teams who compete in a Championship event at Nationals. This is the second time GHS students Kate Scanlan and Kendall Barnhart received All-American status, which currently makes them two-time All-Americans. They first earned this coveted status at last year’s Outdoor Track Nationals.
Congratulations to our exceptionally talented GHS students: Maeghan Hickey, Kate Scanlan, Kendall Barnhart and Parker Steele!
