A message from Dr. Wiles:

Dear GCSD Families,

It is with great sorrow and heartache that I share with you the loss of a beloved member of the Guilderland school community. On Wednesday, May 29, senior Gabriel Zullo passed away at his home surrounded by family, following a brave, four and a half-year battle with cancer.

Gabe will be remembered for his warm presence and valiant spirit. He beamed with positivity, brightening up any room he was in with his friendly smile. Many students were fortunate to call Gabe their friend. He made a tremendous impact on the Guilderland school community, inspiring all with his capacity to confront adversity with courage and grace. He will be missed immensely.

Services to honor and remember Gabe will take place on June 7-8. His wake will be on Friday, June 7 from 3-7 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul, which is located at 900 Madison Avenue, Albany, NY 12208. The funeral will be on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m., also at St. Vincent de Paul, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Gabe’s Scholarship Fund here

Facing the death of a young person is extremely difficult. As a district we are prepared to support our students and staff as they process the many emotions that come with such a loss. School psychologists, counselors and social workers will be available for anyone who needs assistance during this challenging time. Students who would like to speak to someone can contact their school counselor or ask any staff member for help.

Discussing thoughts and feelings is important in helping your child work through grief. I encourage families to speak with their children as they may have questions regarding this loss and the impact it may have. We have included some resources that may be helpful as you discuss Gabe’s death. Please feel free to contact Guilderland High School Principal Michael Piscitelli at 518-861-8591 if you need additional assistance.

As a school community, we extend our sincerest condolences and sympathies to Gabe’s family and friends.

Sincerely,

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent
