January Young Artists of the Month

Each month, the art teachers from Altamont Elementary, Guilderland Elementary, Lynnwood Elementary and Westmere Elementary highlight students who have demonstrated they are practicing Studio Habits of Mind. These eight habits – develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds – encourage and enable students to be more mindful during the creative process. This is not a contest; the Young Artist of the Month accomplishment acknowledges specific learning and critical thinking that happens in the art room, in relation to Studio Habits of Mind. The students’ pictures and statements are framed and hung in the schools’ entryways.

Mason Tenney, AES

AES is proud to announce the young artist for the month of January is Mason Tenney in Mrs. Gregory’s 5th grade class! Mason did a fantastic job at showcasing the studio habit, express. This habit is about using art to communicate ideas, emotions, or stories. Mason’s pop art emoji reflects his personal interests, Minecraft It involves deciding how to show meaning and personal expression through art, understanding the impact of visual language, and sharing your thoughts, interests and feelings creatively. Great job, Mason!

Guilderland Elementary: Tara Kohler

Tara Kohler, AES

Tara is in Mrs. Ever’s  2nd grade class this year. During art, Tara has exhibited the Artist Habit of Mind: Envision. This means that Tara can generate her own unique ideas and picture the next step in her work to express those ideas. Tara is a very thoughtful artist with creative and detailed ideas. She needs to be able to plan for her next steps and understand how to and when to add those creative ideas and details. By doing this Tara is able to communicate her ideas or story in her finished artwork. Way to go Tara!

Lynnwood Elementary: Eddie Leyden

Eddie Leyden, LES

Eddie embodies the Studio Habit of Mind; Envision and to Reflect. To Envision means to create a plan and make it happen. You can see how Eddie did this in his latest art project. He created a postcard about a landmark in NYC. He spent time really thinking about and researching what the building looked like but also what symbols he could use to represent New York. He came up with his plan and used it to help him create his final copy. He was also Reflective, this means he thought about what would work and what he needed to change as he was working. The same way a writer would revise and edit, Eddie made changes from his original plan to make sure he created his best possible work. Great job Eddie!

Westmere Elementary: Aleiza Rahman

Aleiza Rahman, WES

Aleiza is a 2nd grader in Mrs. Durocher’s class. She has demonstrated the Studio Habit of Mind: Stretch & Explore. When you stretch, you are trying something new that might be a challenge. When you explore, you are discovering new ideas. Aleiza is always up for a challenge when we try something new in art class! In this picture, she is holding up a project she made using chalk pastels… a new art material! Aleiza tries her best to be a mindful and caring artist. Amazing work, Aleiza!
