Combining community service with some friendly competition.
In March, Guilderland Elementary School (GES) ran a food drive to benefit the Guilderland Food Pantry. This yearly event is organized by teachers and the GES Student Council and each grade level competes to see who can collect the most items.
Representatives from the GES Student Council designed posters to help promote the food drive and used shopping carts, graciously donated by Market 32, to collect donations each day. The students would then tally the total number of items collected and announcements were made every afternoon to keep everyone informed of which grade was in the lead.
A total of 1,225 items were donated to the Guilderland Food Pantry, which fifth grade student council representatives loaded onto a school bus and delivered to the pantry on March 25.
